This poster is by one of the few female American poster artists to work for the US Government in WWII. Martha Sawyers (1902- 1988) was born in Texas but formally trained at The Art Students League in New York. She began her career as an illustrator for Broadway, and traveled extensively throughout Asia in the inter war years creating anthropological portraits. Upon her return, she was commissioned by Life Magazine as a war correspondent to the Far East. From there, she was hired to create several WWII posters such as this one. She continued to travel and work abroad for the rest of her life.
Poster is in good condition with strong vibrant colors. There are several seam splits, and paper tears, however all material is there. When the poster is mounted and framed, these imperfections should clean up very nicely.
About the Seller
I am not a dealer in the traditional sense of the word, in that I buy and sell product to make a profit. Every item in this collection has been in my family since it was acquired in the 1940s. These posters were collected by both my grandfather and my father and have been in my family from the beginning and we are the original owners.
I have what I believe to be one of the largest private collections of WW 2 posters in the country today. It is only now that we find ourselves in the process of trying to simplify our lives and minimize our collections of stuff. We are now trying to make these historical documents available to those that have a desire to have and best examples of original World War 2 propaganda artwork available.
All posters are guaranteed to be authentic originals with no reproductions. What is listed is by far everything we have, and will continue to add new posters as time permits.
