Set of 60 Original Poster PrintsWorld War II Propaganda Cartoon Ads
Rare and Unique Museum Quality Collection
This set is probably one of a kind! These 59 (there is one duplicate in the set) advertisements were created and published from May 1942 through July 1943 on a somewhat weekly basis for the Philco Corporation employee newsletter as morale boosters. As Philco was heavily involved in the U.S. war production effort via electronics and research,
they were also posted and displayed around the Philco plant. In addition, the ads were simultaneously carried by many of the largest circulation publications of the day, such as Time, Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Better Homes & Gardens, Collier's, Ladies Home Journal, and others.
Created by many of the leading cartoonists of the day, most all of the ads depict demeaning caricatures of the three Axis powers leaders, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hideki Tojo. The cartoonist's wit and biting satire are on full display in these works, while elevating the American worker, farmer and soldier and the overall American war production effort.
These oversize prints measure approximately 12" x 17 1/2" and are loosely housed in a burgundy leather (or leatherlike) folio with silk moire endpapers. They have probably been kept there for the past 80 years contributing greatly to their superior condition. Most are without flaws but there is some paper browning at the extreme edges on many. Most severe flaws are that one print has a 2" perforation in the lower center of the art (a tear, but art is not missing) and the two vertical prints are 3 ring binder hole pierced with paper reinforcements surrounding the 3 holes, and one print has overall browning. The other condition issues are minor and consist of 1/8" corner chips, small corner folds, edge wear and or small tears at the edges 1/8" - 1/2", and dust shadows at the edges 1/16"- 1/2" all to varying degrees on about half of the prints. On all, the paper remains flexible and has no brittleness.
These ads were offered by mail from Philco to those who wrote in and asked for a copy. This particular collector was fastidious in requesting every ad available that was published in that time frame and I doubt that there is another collection like it in existence.
Here is the chance to own a very rare piece of militaria history offering an unusually unique window back into a much darker time.
